A simple morning run
With grins and sunglasses covering our faces, my little ones and I set out for a morning run. Depending on the morning and intended miles, my little guy hops on his bike or opts for his running shoes. A light attitude and a bit of encouragement keeps the little feet moving. My eight year old can now run 3 miles and my little 4 year old is at 1.5 miles. I let the littlest set the pace, and I chime in a few pointers here and there: pick up your knees, stand up straight, use your arms, head for your mid-foot (my kids run in barefoot shoes.)
It is a lesson in grit, resilience and determination. It is also teaching physical literacy. Running is a learned skill that needs practice and guidance to be fully proficient. After a few miles of running the kids are proud. They know they have worked hard and that feeling of accomplishment goes a long way in a little child’s life. It expands not only into sport and health, but academics and their growth as a small, healthy human being.
